The Nagaland Police personnel are not far behind their counterparts in other parts of India when it comes to making the supreme sacrifice to uphold and safeguard the integrity and security of the nation. The story of their courage and sacrifice resound not only in the State of Nagaland where they actively combatted the insurgents but also in the LWE affected states of Chhattisgarh and West Bengal where the “Naga Force” is regarded even today. Since 1964, 371 Nagaland Police martyrs, including 9 (nine) Officers have laid down their lives in the line of duty.

1. Lt. VED PRAKASH

Superintendent of Police Lt. VED PRAKASH IPS, Superintendent of Police, Mokokchung 19.05.1994 – 26.08.1994

Late Shri.Vedprakash, IPS, Superintendent of Police during his tenure as SP Mokokchung w.e.f. 19/05/1994 to 26/08/1994, worked tirelessly and most sincerely to reactivate the District Police. The officer would physically present himself and led the personnel during raids, frisking and checking and other special ops. etc. The sudden reactivation of the Policemen in curbing the law and order situation in the town is believed to have caused the anti-social elements, a bitter hatred for the officer who was only doing his job sincerely and effectively.

            Further, it is also mentioned in an official record which was send to the DGP office, Nagaland vide this office Confidential Letter No. MDP/CB-PS-1/6(8)94/96/114 Dated 29/01/1996 that on one occasion while conducting a surprise mobile patrol at night on the highway along with his police party, one UG was apprehendedalongwith a Pistol. After a few days Late Shri.VedPrakash received a threat letter from the UG set-up to return the Pistol, which was seized, failing to comply with the threat to his life. The officer disregarded such threats and continued to perform his duties fearlessly.

            On 26th August 1994 at around 1500 hrs while Shri. VedPrakash, IPS, wasproceeding to his official residence after attending his office in his official vehicle (Gypsy) B/R NPCW-57, some unidentified gunmen ambushed the vehicle near Dobashi Hotel, Mokokchung (Sangtemla Ward) and Shri. Vedprakash, IPS alongwith 2 (two) Bodyguards and the driver were shot dead in the ambush.

2. Lt. Shri Akangyanger Aier

Commandant Akangyanger Aier 1st NAP Bn 11/05/1995 at Dimapur

Lt. Shri Akangyanger Aier, IPS joined service in 1962 as Sub-Inspector. Subsequently, he was promoted in due course and was inducted into IPS in 1993 and was allotted 1987 batch as IPS. Further, Lt. Shri Akangyanger Aier was awarded the Police Medal for Special Duty and Police Medal of Meritorious Service.

On 11/05/1995, Lt. Shri Akangyanger Aier, Comdt. 1st NAP Bn Chumukedima was ambushed near Padam Pukhuri gate where armed miscreants fired upon the government ambassador car he was travelling in and was shot dead in the ambush.

3. VEER THIUBUIBO

The brave unarmed branch CN Lt. T. Thiubuibo Zeliang of DEF, Dimapur was born in the family of Rtd. Naik Shri. P. Huchmang Zeliang, DEF Peren and Smti. Awangliu Zeliang of Jalukie, Peren District, Nagaland on 05/03/1985. He was appointed and enrolled in the DEF Peren on 01/06/2004 at the age of 19 years and passed out the Basic Training from NAPTC, Chumukedima on 19/11/2005 and he was posted to DEF Dimapur. During his posting to DEF Dimapur he served as an AB CN for 3 years and was converted to UB CN in the year 2008 and posted to East police Station Dimapur to perform his bonafied duties ardently with dedication and efficiently. He was also very reliable when entrusted with a task and performed his duties diligently and wholeheartedly and for which, he was posted to the Special operation team (SOT) to tackle and prevent heinous crime such as extortion / kidnapping / vehicle theft and other high profile cases in Dimapur Town by the UG Factions and Anti- social elements. During his posting to SOT, his commitment to duty, display of courage and achievement were remarkable and recognition, he earned several Commendation and Appreciation Certificates from his immediate Controlling Officer and Senior Officers of Nagaland Police as well as neighbouring States of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

The brave UB Police CN of DEF Dimapur, UBC. Lt. Thiubuibo Zeliang laid down his life in the line of duty on 14/07/2014 without hitch of his small family for the post his duty as a true Policemen for the country and for Nagaland Police in particular, ; leading behind his wife and 1 (one) daughter. In connection with Arunachal Pradesh, Karsang PS Case No. 04/2013 U/S 364 A IPC, the Prime accused was evading Police arrest and based on Dimapur, Nagaland with the victim. On receipt of specific information, operation was conducted in the Border of Nagaland and Assam assisting the Arunachal Pradesh Police. Among the team, Lt. Thiubuibo Zeliang, UBC was on the forward personnel assigned to lead the party. The accused opened fire upon the police team and the team retaliated during which Lt. Thiubuibo Zeliang received bullet injuries. On the ground of his selfless sacrifice and dedication to the duty, he was awarded Parakram Padak on 08/03/2013.
In a separate incident on 13/07/2014, at about 23 hours Lt. Thiubuibo Zeliang along with other members of SOT went to Thilixu Village under the command of their immediate officer to arrest and accused suspected to be involved in connection with East PS Case No. 129/2004 U/S 302 IPC. During the house search at Thilixu Village, the wanted accused was found absconding but the team recovered weapons and different types of ammunitions from the house. As the team was retreating back at around 0030 hrs on 14/07/2014, the police team upon a car parked in the middle of the road and a man as Viyishe Sumi with a machete to confront the police team. The man tried to snatch the firearms from one of the police comrade. On seeing the act Lt. Thiubuibo Zeliang UBC boldly intervened into the scuffle and tried to help his comrade, whereby the accused Viyishe Sumi managed to pull the trigger and the bullet tragically hit Lt. Thiubuibo Zeliang on the chest and he succumbed to the bullet injury at District hospital Dimapur. Lt. Thiubuibo Zeliang UBC had displayed supreme act of valour and became a Martyr while saving the life of fellow personnel.
